Watched the first episode and found the setting to be a little confusing, but by the 7th episode I found myself chuckling at the comical antics of the characters. The series displays prominent Japanese humour that targets adults and children, but tries to borderline on the age restriction. Completley different to the slapstick style of the west, Gintama offers the subtle overtones to appease adult audiences while adding loud rambunctiousness into the storyline.

I must be watching a different anime to the other reviewers, because I just don't see where the 5-stars are coming from.
I've watched the first seven episodes only (yes - I know there is close to 200 so am only seeing a fraction of what's available) but I am seriously thinking of stopping. So far, this is a 2-star anime (maybe 3-star if I'm feeling generous).
Confusing, wishy-washy plot (what plot?). Characters that are caricatures/cliches (yes - I even GET that they are supposed to be cliched), but it's just not funny. The super-strong girl who just eats all the time (this attempt to add humour gets real old, real fast)? The glasses-wearing apprentice hoping to learn from the master? The main character, Gintoki, who is the lazy but heart-of-gold type? It would be ok if the characters were interesting. But the problem for me is that the characters just aren't even particularly LIKEABLE.
The anime seems to rely heavily upon slapstick comedy and has little else (other than the creative plot of Aliens arriving due Edo period Japan). On a positive point - the animation seems of decent quality, with occasional CGI woven in (particularly for the futuristic scenes).
At no time in the seven episodes I've watched has there been the LEAST hint of tension, physical danger or actual threat. Without this buildup, all you are doing is watching slapstick comedy action with some pretty average characters as it is a foregone conclusion that they are going to 'win through' at the end of every episode.
I would say that this anime is firmly marketed towards a young teen or even pre-teen audience based on the level of humour.
Maybe it improves with futher episodes - I don't know. If I continue watching a few more, I'll include a revised review. But so far - not impressed.
I am a big fan of Bleach which I consider to be worthy of 4-stars (and in some aspects is 5-stars), but Gintama is just not floating my boat. It's a mess of cliched characters, has no over-arching plot to speak of so far and relies too heavily on 'cheap' slapstick humour.
Not recommended at this point for anyone much over 15 years of age.
